NEW ENGLAND RUNNERS TO TACKLE CANCER BEFORE SUNDAY'S BIG GAME
INAUGURAL BOSTON RUNNER SUPER SUNDAY 5K/10K RACE WILL BENEFIT THE DANA-FARBER CANCER INSTITUTE AND THE JIMMY FUND
BOSTON, MA - January 28, 2008 - Giants won’t be the only thing New Englanders are battling this weekend. At 10:00am on Sunday, Feb. 3rd, the inaugural Boston Runner Super Sunday 5K/10K road race hits the streets of the city’s Seaport district. Local running icon Jack Fultz, 1976 Boston Marathon champion, will serve as Grand Marshal, with proceeds from the event supporting the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and The Jimmy Fund.
The race offers the more than 250 expected competitors a tour of Boston's growing Seaport district, highlighted by spectacular waterfront views along the Harborwalk. From the start/finish at Legal Sea Foods' headquarters in the Marine Industrial Park, runners will travel down Seaport Blvd. to the Fan Pier area, passing the new Institute of Contemporary Art before a lap around the beautiful Moakley Federal Courthouse. Here, stunning panoramic views of downtown Boston's waterfront will rejuvenate the runners as they begin the final mile of the 3.1 mile (5km) circuit. Participants will complete either one or two laps of the circuit, depending on their event choice.
With the 112th running of the Boston Marathon a mere 77 days away, look for elite and recreational runners alike to use the Super Sunday 5K/10K as a winter test of fitness. “Thousands of runners across New England train all winter long for the Boston Marathon,” said Jack Fultz, training coach for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge. “But it’s never been easy to find races at this time of year. Suddenly we have two new races at once; the running community is very excited about this event.”
Boston runner J. Alain Ferry, better known for his speed on a bike, is promoting the inaugural fund-raising event with the help of his cycling team. “Super Sunday gives all endurance athletes a safe, convenient and exciting venue to gauge their fitness and get the competitive juices flowing again,” said Ferry. “It’s a chance to break up winter’s grasp while supporting a great cause.”
Runners’ times will be tracked electronically by Velocity Results, using the latest technology from IPICO Sports. The first 150 registered runners receive a free t-shirt and all participants will enjoy free food and drink after the event. Legal Sea Foods will be at the finish line with piping hot cups of New England Clam Chowder, along with smartwater and vitaminwater compliments of Glaceau. Additional sponsors include Harpoon Brewery, unlose.it and MetLife. In the event of inclement weather, the race will be postponed to the following Sunday, Feb. 10th.

2007 season recap
With a brand new title sponsor, a bolstered and powerful roster, and an ambitious race schedule, 2007 marked the beginning of a new era for the Legal Sea Foods Pro-Am Cycling team. A bigger budget and a greater range of talent meant that we would be more competitive in any race we entered. For eight months our 10-man squad raced nearly every weekend, through the pounding rain and bitter cold of a New England April to the blistering bake of July asphalt. The team attended more than 40 official races and competed in dozens of uncounted training criteriums, hill climbs, and time trials. And in order to compete at the level in which we did, the team collectively trained more than 8,000 hours, a lot of time spent in the saddle.
The team tasted success with more than 25 top-20 finishes, nearly every team member contributing to the count. Season highlights include Ryan Fleming’s stellar breakaway abilities as seen in multiple top-5 criterium finishes, Alain Ferry’s 3rd place at the Norwell Circuit Race, and Ryan and Peter’s 6th and 8th place at the indefatigable Tour of the Hilltowns.
The team would like to thank all of its sponsors for their support throughout the year. Without their help, none of our success would be possible. A special thank you to Legal Sea Foods whose amazing support made the team possible. Thank you to MetLife and unlose.it, the team’s two presenting sponsors. The team thanks VeloEuropa imports for its stellar Cyfac racing bicycles. Thank you to Glaceau, makers of Vitaminwater. And thank you to Landry’s Bicycles and S&W Sports, two of the best bicycle shops in the country.
A stronger and more ambitious team will return for 2008 with key riders signed in order to strengthen our already talent-laden team. With a predicted larger budget we also anticipate racing a countrywide schedule with several National Racing Calendar events in the mix. We are also set to direct the Turtle Pond Circuit Race for the fourth year with the possibility of an even bigger criterium to happen in Boston. We hope to continue to improve our relationships with sponsors with better feedback and representation. A new weekly Enewsletter will help keep our supporters as up-to-date as possible.
2007 was a great year and a very good starting point. Next season, however, is shaping up to be the best yet. We hope you’ll continue to tune in here for the latest news and we look forward to your support in 2008. |
